The Shuffle, Deal and Blinds: The dealer shuffles a standard deck and the two players to the Dealer’s left will place a predetermined bet known as the “small blind” (half the minimum bed), and the “large blind” (the minimum bet). The dealer will then shuffle a standard deck of 52 cards and deal each player two “hole cards” face down.

Betting Begins: A round of betting begins with the player to left of the player who posted the big blind. Players can call the minimum bet to stay in the game, raise the bet or fold and exit when it is their turn to bet.

The Flop: After the first round of betting, the dealer “burns” (discards) the top card of the deck and flips over the next three chards face up on the table. In common lowball, the perfect low hand is an A-5 Straight.

New York Stud: The variation adds the stipulation that an outside straight beats a pair. An outside straight is four of a player’s cards in numerical sequence or four cards to a straight. This adds a new rank to the hierarchy of the card hands. The outside straight beats a pair but loses to a two pair.

Spanish Stud: Spanish Stud or simply Spanish poker involves all the Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives and Sixes, creating a 32-card deck with a minimum of four players and a maximum of six. All other rules of poker remain unchanged.

Bet/Drop: This variant removes the option to check and adds the stipulation that the player who opens the betting round by having the best hand showing must open with the table’s minimum bet or fold. Typically, the dealer will announce a slight increase in the table’s minimum bet.

Cold Hands: A less popular variant due to its significantly higher ante where there are no betting rounds. Cards are dealt face up and the best hand wins.
