Looking Back at Poker Chips

Everyone is more than familiar with the game of Poker. While everyone may not be conversant with the rules and different variations still the term “Poker” is an easily recognizable to most everyone. Likewise along with this public familiarity with the term and the game goes the knowledge that there is betting done with poker chips. This too is widely known. Everything has its history and its origins and the poker chip is no different.

The earliest of the play poker chips are not what anyone today would recognize or consider as a poker chips. What was evident was that soon after poker was starting to become the game to play and that real money was going to start changing hands that some form of representation and standardization had to be created. In these early days of the game not everyone that sat down to a table had the same currency as the other players; some had no currency at all really. There may have been gold, silver, furs, supplies, or maybe even simply food.

Most poker players wanted to play with an amount of money that they didn’t actually have on their person at that time or even if they did were not keen on the idea of having that much money on the table at any one time. Considering they were sitting at a table or around other tables with men gambling with large amounts of money, armed with either guns or knives and in various states of intoxication this seemed a wise decision.

It was at this time that bars and gambling houses began providing UltimateBet.net poker chips to the card players in their establishment. The bar would hold onto the money and for a small fee offer the player chips in monetary representation. The money was safe and now all the players could sit down to a game of poker on a reasonably level playing field.

Of course it must be understood at this time in history there were no “poker chips” as we understand them. Most bars, gambling houses and or brothels as a lot of them were had to devise their own “chips” to be used in the house. In these places it was usually stones, pieces of wood or even bones that were used as poker “chips”. Whatever the house could find, make or use in sufficient quantities that could represent money for all of the players involved. It was not until around the 1880’s when industry was capable of producing a standardized regular poker chip made out of clay. Later on as technologies improved the poker chips would become plastic and acrylic.

Today with the advent of huge casinos and poker tables all over the world poker chips had to be mass produced in numbers too large to imagine. Poker chips today are made taking into consideration all the different casinos and players. There are made with distinct designs and weights, and implanted with microchips, so as to keep those of an unsavoury nature from counterfeiting.
